Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Title:  Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Description:  Now we've come to the very west end of the former trestle. Here we can see straight across to the other side. The walking trail at the bottom of the frame is fairly new, having been installed sometime around 2008. The path (or something resembling a path) used to end right at the trestle.

Pilings from the B&O-WLE interchange's trestle over the Cuyahoga River
Title:  Pilings from the B&O-WLE interchange's trestle over the Cuyahoga River
Description:  The former wooden pilings from the B&O-WLE interchange track's trestle over the Cuyahoga River are tossed aside and laying in the woods, waiting for nature to reclaim them. The graded hill in the background is the former site of the interchange track. It doesn't look like much, but I'd say that at least 80-90% of the pilings used to support the bridge are laying here.

Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Title:  Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Description:  The typical photo from the walking trail looking across the Cuyahoga River to where the east end of the trestle was. Through the trees in the background is the CSX (ex-B&O) mainline. On this day, the river was a bit too high to see the tops of the sawed-off wooden pilings poking out of the water.

Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Title:  Former trestle site; B&O-WLE interchange track
Description:  A view from the walking trail of the west end of the trestle. This is the exact point-of-view I had of the trestle as I approached it at age 4 or 5 when my parents and I walked back here, only then this was a much more desolate area and the path wasn't nearly as inviting. Back then it was a rut through the tall weeds. Also, I vividly remember being intimidated by the fact that you had to walk on what seemed to be the edge of a steep drop-off down to a rushing river that was negotiating around the wooden pilings of the trestle.

Walking west along the B&O-WLE interchange track ROW
Title:  Walking west along the B&O-WLE interchange track ROW
Description:  Back up onto the ROW, here we see a view looking west and uphill towards the Wheeling. The small clearing directly ahead is the former crossing of the water plant entrance that we started this walk on.

Overgrown ties from the B&O-WLE interchange
Title:  Overgrown ties from the B&O-WLE interchange
Description:  A few leftover ties from the interchange track rot away and are now being consumed by the growing brush. The tie on the left caught my interest because it still had a tie plate on it.

Where the interchange to WLE split off from the B&O
Title:  Where the interchange to WLE split off from the B&O
Description:  I'm now on the CSX (ex-B&O) end of the interchange track. The pole line to the right is where the track branched off to cross the river and head uphill to the Wheeling. Down the length of the CSX tracks you can see the Wheeling's trestle.

Looking west across the former trestle site
Title:  Looking west across the former trestle site
Description:  I'm now standing at the east end of the trestle over the Cuyahoga River. Several minutes prior I was on the exact opposite side (by the walking trail). By the looks of it, this trestle was under 20 feet high, but when I was a kid it took the appearance of a 30-40 foot high structure. Then again, everything like this looks enormous to a kid. Across the river and to the left of where the trestle went in is the Kent Water Reclamation plant.

Looking west across the Cuyahoga River where the trestle once existed
Title:  Looking west across the Cuyahoga River where the trestle once existed
Description:  I'm at river's edge and at this height would've been directly beneath the trestle. That "hump" straight across the river from me is where the west end of the trestle would've been, and that is the side of the river that I walked to many years ago when it still existed. On left is the Kent Water Reclamation plant. The river was a bit high this day after several recent rain showers.

Ties still in place on the former B&O-WLE interchange
Title:  Ties still in place on the former B&O-WLE interchange
Description:  Many of the ties at the east end of the interchange track are still in their original place having never been pulled up along with the rail. If not for these, I doubt this location would even be recognizable as a former railroad ROW.

Abandoned bike and ties on the former B&O-WLE interchange track
Title:  Abandoned bike and ties on the former B&O-WLE interchange track
Description:  A bicycle from who-knows-when is being engulfed by the shrubbery at the very eastern end of the B&O-WLE interchange track. To the left of the bike you can see some of the ties from the former ROW. These were never pulled up and are still in their exact locations. Through the brush in the background is the CSX New Castle Subdivision, the ex-B&O.

Abandoned bill box
Title:  Abandoned bill box
Description:  A box I'd image was for railroad order forms lays in the weeds along the former interchange track ROW. I made sure to peak inside but only found it empty. Too bad. Relics like this are very interesting and are scattered throughout along this short piece of railroad.

LE&P trestle, looking west
Title:  LE&P trestle, looking west
Description:  I made a walk back in the winter to this trestle while snow was still on the ground. Now I've walked back again and this time while wearing shorts and dodging thick shrubbery. Here we see the top view of the final remaining LE&P trestle that still has track on it. It spans the Cuyahoga River near the Akron water facility. It is spaced for two tracks but the area on left where the southerly (eastbound) mainline track used to be is almost completely engulfed in trees.

Overgrown LE&P trestle
Title:  Overgrown LE&P trestle
Description:  Several months ago I had made a winter walk back here with no leaves on the trees and plenty of snow on the ground. Now the trees are full of leaves and the ground is dry - and the trestle is barely visible. This is the final remaining LE&P trestle that has track still on it. It exists on a 1 1/2 mile stretch of the LE&P that still exists in Brady Lake, Ohio and spans the Cuyahoga River.

LE&P/C&P Junction
Title:  LE&P/C&P Junction
Description:  I am standing on the eastbound LE&P mainline track and looking downhill to where it joined into the C&P mainline, now the NS Cleveland Line. The bridge abutment at left is where the westbound LE&P mainline track flew over the C&P. Behind me, the two LE&P tracks leveled out in time for the crossing of the Cuyahoga River.

LE&P/C&P Junction
Title:  LE&P/C&P Junction
Description:  The LE&P's eastbound mainline track that I'm standing on looks as though it's certainly seen better days. Built around 1910-1911 (I believe), the LE&P was the final piece of railroad built in Ohio and with phenomenal engineering. However, the Penn Central chose the C&P mainline over the LE&P and thus around 1970 (give or take), the LE&P was removed with the exception of a 1 1/2 mile stretch that still remains in Brady Lake, Ohio. NS used to serve Hugo Stone and the Akron water facility on this branch but service has since been discontinued. It has now sat dormant for over 10 years. The bridge abutment in the center is where the westbound LE&P main flew over the C&P (now the NS Cleveland Line). The two tracks leveled out behind me before crossing the Cuyahoga River on the previously pictured bridge. The milepost 89.5 box on the left is for the cab-signalling system that was implemented in 2001. I want to say that a set of Pennsy PL signals used to stand a bit west of here.

LE&P/C&P Junction
Title:  LE&P/C&P Junction
Description:  I'm standing on the eastbound LE&P mainline track looking north at the C&P mainline, now the NS Cleveland Line. Up until sometime in the 1990s, this view would've shown a large trestle spanning the C&P. This trestle was the westbound LE&P main on it's "flyover". To the left and down the length of the LE&P, the two mainline tracks leveled out in time for the crossing of the Cuyahoga River. The aforementioned large trestle was removed in the 1990s as a part of Conrail's doublestack clearance project. This is in Brady Lake, Ohio.

Former site of LE&P flyover
Title:  Former site of LE&P flyover
Description:  I'm now standing alongside the C&P mainline, now the NS Cleveland Line and looking west towards Cleveland. Once again we see the bridge abutment for the old LE&P "flyover" that carried the westbound main over the C&P. At left is the LE&P's eastbound main. I really wish I was old enough to have photographed this old LE&P trestle. It was pretty fascinating, however, it saw it's time at the hands of Conrail in the 1990s during their doublestack clearance project. The LE&P was built around 1910-1911 with phenomenal engineering. It was a paper railroad that was owned by both the PRR and NYC. Correct me if wrong but I believe the line was built by the PRR while strictly NYC trains operated over it. The line was abandoned/removed in the late 1960s (or around 1970) by the Penn Central after they chose the C&P route into Cleveland.

LE&P flyover bridge abutment
Title:  LE&P flyover bridge abutment
Description:  This is the former east bridge abutment for the LE&P flyover that used to exist in Brady Lake, Ohio. It carried the LE&P's westbound mainline track over the C&P (now the NS Cleveland Line - the doubletrack main in the foreground) and joined the LE&P's eastbound mainline track (the track at right going uphill). This trestle was removed in the 1990s as a part of Conrail's doublestack clearance project.

Overgrown original C&P alignment
Title:  Overgrown original C&P alignment
Description:  What looks like a photo of nothing but woods is actually a photo of the original alignment of the C&P mainline. Sometime around 1906-1908, the C&P was relocated a couple hundred feet to the south here in Brady Lake. The old alignment more or less parallels Ravenna Road by feet and then goes on to cross the Cuyahoga River at a different location than the present day spot. The two alignments don't end up joining back together until downtown Hudson, Ohio. When the relocation occurred, the mileage from Rochester, Pa was never adjusted to accommodate the upgrade and therefore there is no milepost RD97 on the C&P, now the NS Cleveland Line. Many call it the "missing mile"...

Title:  Bridge ruins
Description:  The former wooden trestle that carried the B&O-WLE interchange track over the Cuyahoga River (as well as get me started into the hobby) still lays nearby in the form of a heap of treated wood slowly being reclaimed by nature. I still doubt that this is every last piece of wood from the structure.
