This location is where there once was a wooden trestle spanning the Cuyahoga River that existed along the old interchange track between the B&O and the Wheeling (WLE, not WE). N&W discontinued service on the interchange in the late 1970s and the track sat dormant until the mid to late 1990s when it was removed. I only have foggy memories of this bridge now. |

Former LE&P trestle |
| Description: |
This is the last remaining LE&P trestle that has track on it. It is hidden in the woods north of Kent, Ohio. This line was once a part of the Lake Erie & Pittsburgh Rwy, a paper railroad that existed between Brady Lake and Cleveland but was operated by the New York Central and maintained by the PRR (if memory serves me correctly). The Penn Central abandoned and removed most of the line, leaving only a 2 or 3 mile segment that accessed a stone plant just outside of Kent. The stone plant no longer uses rail service and now this line sits dormant with rumors now surfacing that this trestle failed bridge inspection. |

Atop the trestle in Kent, I took a photo looking west on the remaining piece of the LE&P. In the VERY far distance, you can see the track duck beneath Route 43. This was the site of a mishap involving a doublestack about 8-10 years ago. When a crew attempted to spot a bad-ordered doublestack, it got jammed beneath the highway overpass which resulted in the closing of the road for several weeks while the bridge was inspected and repaired. |

Looking east from the trestle, we can see straight to the point where the LE&P ran into the C&P (now the NS Cleveland Line). Notice that the track jogs in the foreground. This is where it assumed the position of the eastbound (southerly) main and left the position of the westbound (northerly) main. In the distance to the left of the track, you can notice a bit of a grade taking off. This is where the westbound main came downhill from it's "flyover" crossing the C&P. There used to be a decent sized trestle over the C&P that was removed as a part of Conrail's doublestack-clearance project in the 1990s. The eastbound LE&P main went straight downhill and into the C&P. |

Looking across the Cuyahoga River offers a view of what was once the east end of the trestle that existed on the B&O/WLE connection track. The rippling of the water near the middle of the photo is caused by the sawed-off wooden posts that were once a part of the supports for the bridge. This bridge was removed in the mid to late 1990s and is now a distant memory to me. It's unfortunate that I never got any photos and now can't find any. This bridge and surrounding area are mostly responsible for my interest in the hobby. |

This mound covered in weeds and snow was formerly the west end of the trestle spanning the Cuyahoga River that was along the B&O-WLE interchange track. When the trestle still existed, this was the end of the path. In fact, the path never was continued until about 3 or 4 years ago. This was once a pretty desolate area. Again, it's very unfortunate that I never managed to grab photos of this bridge prior to its removal. I was very young when it met the torch. |

A view from the walking trail of the west end of the trestle. This is the exacw point-of-view I had of the trestle as I approached it at age 4 or 5 when my parents and I walked back here, only then this was a much more desolate area and the path wasn't nearly as inviting. Back then it was a rut through the tall weeds. Also, I vividly remember beine intimidated by the fact that you had to walk on what seemed to be the edge of a steep drop-off down to a rushing river that was negotiating around the wooden pilings of the trestle. |

By the looks of it, this trestle was under 20 feet high, but when I was a kid is took the appearance of a 30-40 foot high structure. Then again, everything like this looks enormous to a kid. Across the river and to the left of where the trestle went in is the Kent Water Reclamation plany. |

I made a walk back in the winter to this trestle while snow was still on the ground. Now I've walked back again and this time while wearing shorts and dodging thick shrubbery. Here we see the top view of the final remaining LE&P trestle that still has track on it. It spans the Cuyahoga River near the Akron water facility. It is spaced for two tracks but the area on left where the southerly (eastbound) mainline track used to be is almost completely engulfed in trees. |

The LE&P's eastbound mainline track that I'm standing on looks as though it's certainly seen better days. Built around 1910-1911 (I believe), the LE&P was the final piece of railroad built in Ohio and with phenomenal engineering. However, the Penn Central chose the C&P mainline over the LE&P and thus around 1970 (give or take), the LE&P was removed with the exception of a 1 1/2 mile stretch that still remains in Brady Lake, Ohio. NS used to serve Hugo Stone and the Akron water facility on this branch but service has since been discontinued. It has now sat dormant for over 10 years. The bridge abutment in the center is where the westbound LE&P main flew over the C&P (now the NS Cleveland Line). The two tracks leveled out behind me before crossing the Cuyahoga River on the previously pictured bridge. The milepost 89.5 box on the left is for the cab-signalling system that was implemented in 2001. I want to say that a set of Pennsy PL signals used to stand a bit west of here. |

Once again we see the bridge abutment for the old LE&P "flyover" that carried the westbound main over the C&P. At left is the LE&P's eastbound main. I really wish I was old enough to have photographed this old LE&P trestle. It was pretty fascinating, however, it saw it's time at the hands of Conrail in the 1990s during their doublestack clearance project. The LE&P was built around 1910-1911 with phenomenal engineering. It was a paper railroad that was owned by both the PRR and NYC. Correct me if wrong but I believe the line was built by the PRR while strictly NYC trains operated over it. The line was abandoned/removed in the late 1960s (or around 1970) by the Penn Central after they chose the C&P route into Cleveland. |

What looks like a photo of nothing but woods is actually a photo of the original alignment of the C&P mainline. Sometime around 1906-1908, the C&P was relocated a couple hundred feet to the south here in Brady Lake. The old alignment more or less parallels Ravenna Road by feet and then goes on to cross the Cuyahoga River at a different location than the present day spot. The two alignments don't end up joining back together until downtown Hudson, Ohio. When the relocation occurred, the mileage from Rochester, Pa was never adjusted to accommodate the upgrade and therefore there is no milepost RD97 on the C&P, now the NS Cleveland Line. Many call it the "missing mile"... |
